The momentum of the round is translated into a wave of energy which propagates across the surface, and interior, of the sphere. Eventually, the wave coalesces on the opposing side into a single point, which creates a smaller fracture the extent of which is related to the wavelength, inverse square law, and physical properties of the material itself. Here's a visual of this oscillation:

Glass breaks very predictably. Thats why it can be cut and worked with. What's happening is impact breaks. High pressure impacts to the glass are dispersed to the sides in a ripple. This is the same way balistic porcelin disperses shock waves in body armor. The glass "shells" it looks similar to sea shells from pressure waves that travel through the glass when the pressure wave hits its self on the other side of the ball it throws the top layer of glass off.

pressure waves through the glass . they start at point of impact , and like a rock in water make ripples which travel to the opposite side of the glass and as they crest the hemisphere they again start to shrink , speed up , and concentrate till they impact themselves. glass is an amorphous solid , which is a state between solid, and liquid .

It's conchodial fracturing ( that's making all of the early fracturing occur. The ripple effects you got from the larger balls is and effect of pressure travelling in a wave through a medium. Glass, obsidian and a few other materials do not have a crystalline structure, by which I mean it is free of structure. Water is a good example, it's just a bunch of H20 molecules bumping into each other, without a structure. When water freezes those molecules form a structure, more or less. When you break something like wood, or plastic, or metal, it breaks along the weakest planes within the matrix. Wood sometimes breaks along the growth rings; those are the weakest areas in the structure. Lots of types of stone have cleavage planes; schist is an excellent example, it's laid down in flat plates and will break along those planes. (Enough pressure will of course break it any way you want.) Glass and obsidian (which is just glass caused by the heat of magma melting silica sand which cools down faster than the molecules have time to form into a structure) do not have cleavage planes or such structures so when you hit them you get a cone of force (the force you imparted) that more or less freezes; there's not enough force to go all the way through the material so you get cones that are visible in the material, which is exactly what you got when you bounced the small ball off the top of the big ball. These are known as Hertzian cones ( and they are precisely what you got when you bounced the small ball off the big one. The rippling you commented on when the big ball finally broke are lines of force that are frozen in the matrix of the material. Think of slapping water with your hand, there are waves that travel out from the point you slapped. With water, the waves propagate their force through the free matrix of the water and travel out from the centre and you are left with water that's just a bit turbulent. With the glass you are seeing that 'slap' frozen in the matrix, it's the same thing that happens in water, just in glass and once the force has dissipated you are left with the visible results of force travelling through a matrix. I hope that answers your questions.

The glass sphere appears to consist of layers that are of varying densities, assuming that is what causes the waves or rippling. The effect of the shock-wave on the less dense layer as it shatters at a single point at 180 degrees where the shock wave meets itself on the other side, is amazing especially how you can see shattered glass under clear unbroken glass. Put it on display. Call it art.

It's because it is send a "shockwave" through the glass, but as soon as there is nowhere left to go, all of the force "leaves" through that little spot creating that crack. It's kinda like the hesh shells used in tanks during ww2.

  65. DailyGrindAus

So, I'm not a scientist, however glass is a solid material under a lot of stress when at rest - the glass molecules are pretty tightly bound, so it is slightly elastic (it will bend and return to shape) but will shatter or disintegrate when you put too much pressure on it. That is why glass shatters and it explains the smooth ripples and internal cracking when subjected to pressure (energy from the bullet). It is also a solid object, so energy will travel through it in the same way a bullet goes through a softer object and leaves an exit wound, except the glass stops the actual bullet (dissipating much of the energy) but transfers its some of the energy to the opposite side. Because of the stress that glass is naturally under, the energy (pressure wave) causes the glass to shatter. I'm sure there are dynamics and physics that can explain that better, but that is why the opposite side also cracks.

I blow glass and I believe what you’re seeing On the other side of the glass is exactly what you’re saying a ripple effect I know it sounds strange but glass even though it appears to be solid stays in a liquid state as a technicality so the idea of the shockwave going through it and impacting the other side makes total sense
